In the book “Drawdown – The Plan”, wind energy is in second place among the 100 most important measures to fight climate change. In addition to the ecological benefits, wind energy is above all inexpensive and highly profitable. Conventional power sources such as oil and coal incur significantly higher direct and long-term costs compared to renewable energies. By 2050 alone, wind power could save around 7 trillion US dollars in costs, while investment costs would be around 1.8 trillion US dollars.¹ Private individuals can also benefit financially from this development. Anyone who is now wondering how a wind farm is created can watch the short explanatory video on the topic.

Compensation areas

There are high nature conservation requirements for the construction of new wind turbines, which include the creation of compensation areas. These can be used, for example, to create mixed orchards, thereby preserving biodiversity and the habitat for flora and fauna.

Moreover, the construction of wind farms is much faster and cheaper than the construction of fossil-fuelled power plants, but planning and approval may take up to five years. So far, Germany has sourced around 20% of its annual energy from wind power, making it the leading country compared with the global average (approx. 3%). The windeurope.org website has an option to interactively find out how much energy the wind is currently supplying.
